Independent communication designer and artist Caroline Ammer works in the field of social design in Zürich and Berlin, where she develops projects exploring visual narratives, digital culture and parenthood. Her designs are showcased through books, films, and textile installations.
A graduate of University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (2021) and the Zurich University of the Arts (2023), Caroline advocates for a cross-disciplinary design practice that intersects visual communication and the performing arts. She examines how ideologies shape social structures and, in turn, how these structures influence our everyday practices, positioning design as both a social and political practice.
Viewing the body as a learning tool, her work questions how our
bodies express and reproduce normative role models.
Drawing on various methodologies, such as journaling and critical
mapping, her artistic practice makes visible the habits and gestures
central to the act of caring.
Building on critical mapping and interviews, Caroline explored disinformation and its impact on family communication in 2020/21, using the project as a means to reconnect with her father. This marked the beginning of her focus on motherhood, which has since become her primary field of research and action. In 2022, she created the performance Unperforming the Mother Script, investigating embodied crises through the lived experiences of mothers she collaborated with. This ongoing project continues to reveal the profound physical and psychological impacts of motherhood, which remain largely invisible and undiscussed in public discourse. Her work also aims to make maternal crises visible in care spaces such as birth centres, where discussing these experiences can lead to innovative responses to maternal care.
